How to Customize Legal Update Emails and Notifications

Set your ideal email preferences to never miss a legal update.

Written by Tess Baldwin

Starting in October, the way legal update emails are delivered changed. You’ll now have full control over your notification settings directly within the SixFifty app.

This update allows you to:

  • Choose the states you want to receive legal update alerts about.

  • Customize the frequency of notifications—choose from immediate, weekly, or monthly.

This ensures you only see the information that’s most relevant to your organization.

💡 Only users with access to Research can receive legal update notification emails.

How to Set Your Legal Update Email Preferences

Follow these steps to update your notification settings in the SixFifty app:

  1. Go to Organization Details

    • Click your user initials in the top right corner of the app.

  2. Access Notification Settings

    • Under Personal, click Notifications.

  3. Customize Your Preferences

    • Here, you can set how often and for which states you’d like to receive legal update notifications.

Notification Frequency Options

When a new legal update is posted, you can choose how quickly you’d like to be notified:

  • Immediate – You’ll receive an email the day after an update is posted.

  • Weekly Digest – A summary email with all updates from the previous week, sent on Mondays.

  • Monthly Digest – A round-up of all updates from the past month, sent on the 1st of the month (or the first business day if the 1st falls on a weekend/holiday).

This flexibility allows you to match notifications to your workflow—whether you prefer real-time alerts or less frequent, consolidated digests.

💡 Email notifications are set by default to be sent monthly. You can change them at any time.

State Selection Options

You can also customize which states you’d like to monitor for legal updates:

  • Select individual states – Focus only on states where your employees are located.

  • Select all states (52 total) – Stay informed about changes across the entire U.S., including Federal and Washington D.C.

This feature helps ensure your compliance team receives the right information without being overwhelmed by unnecessary alerts.

Poster Notification Updates

SixFifty monitors federal, state, and local labor law requirements and automatically notifies you when one or more of your posters requires an update. These notifications help ensure your workplace stays in compliance without having to manually track regulatory changes.

How poster notifications work

When a law changes that affects a poster in your account, SixFifty will generate a notification to alert you. You may receive notifications via email or directly in the SixFifty dashboard, depending on your settings.

Notifications will include:

• Which poster(s) are affected

• The state or jurisdiction impacted

• A summary of what changed

• The effective date of the update

How to update your posters

1. Log in to your SixFifty account and navigate to the Posters section from the dashboard.

2. Look for any posters flagged with an update indicator. These will be highlighted to draw your attention.

3. Click on the affected poster to view the details of what changed and review the updated content.

4. Select Update Poster to generate the new, compliant version.

5. Download or print the updated poster and replace the previous version in your workplace.

💡 If you manage multiple locations, make sure to update posters for each location that was flagged. Some updates are state-specific and may not apply to all of your workplaces.

Managing team access to posters

Organization admins can manage which users have access to Posters from the Admin panel. The Members view shows each user's role, product access, and feature access.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why didn't I receive my weekly email update?

If you’re subscribed to both monthly and weekly update emails, the monthly email takes priority. That means during the first week of each month, you’ll typically receive only the Monthly Update email.

It’s also possible that no new legal updates were published that week. If there are no new entries in Research > Legal Updates, a weekly email will not be sent.

For the most up-to-date information, you can always visit Research > Legal Updates and sort by the Notice Date column to view the latest changes.

Q: Can multiple users in my organization receive update emails?

Yes. Any user with access to Research > Legal Updates can manage their own notification preferences. Each user controls their own settings, so updates aren't managed at the organization level. For a user to edit their legal update notification settings, they need to go to Profile (in the upper-right of the app) > Personal > Notifications

Q: What’s included in a legal update email?

Each email summarizes new or changed employment laws and regulations that were added to Research > Legal Updates during the selected time frame. It includes state, topic, and effective dates with direct links to each update.

Q: Can I view past email updates?

Individual emails aren’t archived, but all updates are stored in Research > Legal Updates. You can filter or sort by Notice Date or Effective Date to view what’s changed over time.
